In April 1984, a reviewer named Jon Lewin sat down with Roland’s new TR-909 and encountered a problem. It sounded like a drum machine.
This was not, at the time, an unreasonable objection. The thing cost £999. Other expensive machines were offering recordings of actual drums, while the Roland’s snare remained, in Lewin’s assessment, “a synthesised thud with a splash of white noise.” He liked the programming system. He admired the bass drum. But a thousand pounds seemed a considerable sum for something that could not convincingly impersonate the person it was apparently intended to replace. [1]
The review is wonderful because it catches a musical instrument at the awkward moment before the world has agreed what it is.
Lewin was evaluating a substitute drummer. Later musicians would approach the same machine as something closer to an orchestra of unusually disciplined electrical events. The thud and the white noise were not unfortunate approximations. They were the attraction. As the techno producer Neil Landstrumm later put it, with the cheerful exaggeration of someone describing an entire scene’s priorities: “if you didn’t have a 909 you weren’t a techno artist.” [2]
The history of drum machines is full of these changes of mind. A domestic accompaniment becomes an instrument of unease. An expensive professional tool becomes the sound of immaculate pop. A memory shortage produces a new sampling technique. A keyboard preset escapes its casing and helps redirect Jamaican music.
But there is an important distinction to establish before opening the cases.
A drum machine’s sound, the machine itself, and the way somebody played it are three different things. A modern record can contain an “808” without having encountered an original Roland. A recognisable LinnDrum sound may have arrived through a sample library. And a sampling drum machine can contain almost anything its owner managed to record into it. “Most used,” consequently, is less a league table of boxes than a history of sounds and working methods that keep turning up in new clothes. [3]
This is their family history.
Before the beat: what is actually inside the box?
The earliest distinction is between making a sound and replaying a recording.
An analogue drum machine creates percussion with electronic circuits. A low oscillation can suggest the body of a bass drum; a burst of noise can suggest the rattle of a snare. A sample-playback machine retrieves a short recording of a drum from memory. A sampler goes further: it allows the musician to record new material into the instrument. These are different capabilities, not successive grades of musical intelligence. The TR-909, inconveniently for tidy classifications, combines analogue drums with sampled cymbals. [4]
The sequencer is a separate proposition. It remembers when sounds should occur. You might tap a performance into it, or place hits along a row of sixteen illuminated steps. In an ordinary bar of 4/4, those sixteen steps can represent sixteenth notes: four subdivisions of each of the four beats.
This distinction matters when listening. A synthesised bass drum can be played with supple timing. A sample of a human drummer can be repeated with terrifying rigidity. “Electronic” does not mean “unmusical,” and “recorded from a real drum” does not mean “played like a person.”
Then comes the recording chain: distortion, equalisation, compression, reverb, tape, a sampler, another sampler, perhaps an engineer who has stopped asking whether this is sensible.
By the time the sound reaches a record, the machine’s passport may be difficult to recognise.
1. The ancestors: when rhythm arrived in furniture
The drum machine did not begin with hip-hop, or even with a particularly clear idea of a drum.
In 1931, the composer Henry Cowell and the inventor Leon Theremin produced the Rhythmicon, a keyboard-operated instrument that connected pitches with corresponding rhythmic divisions. It belongs in this history as a remarkable ancestor of programmable rhythm, not as an early version of a pop drum kit. Its ambitions were closer to making difficult musical relationships physically playable. [5]
Harry Chamberlin’s Rhythmate, developed in the late 1940s, took another route: recorded percussion on tape. Wurlitzer’s Side Man, introduced in 1959, used electronic sound generation and a motor-driven mechanism to organise its rhythms. The Side Man occupied a substantial wooden cabinet. It looked less like something that would overthrow the music industry than something beside which the music industry might put its slippers. [6]
These instruments served an understandable market. An organist, accordionist or entertainer could acquire accompaniment without acquiring several additional people.
Korg’s beginnings grew directly out of that world. Tsutomu Katoh, a nightclub owner, and Tadashi Osanai, an accordionist, wanted something better than the rhythm equipment then available. Their work led to the Donca-Matic, released in 1963. One of electronic music’s important companies thus began not with an abstract declaration about the future, but with a working musician’s dissatisfaction with his accompaniment. [7]
The early preset boxes had a distinctive social manner. Their panels offered named dances. Their sounds were compact, papery, plopping and gently metallic. Their main assumption was that you wanted a rhythm everyone already understood.
Musicians soon began finding uses for the part the manufacturers had not advertised: their refusal to behave quite like a band.
Maestro Rhythm King: Sly Stone’s unsettling little companion
The Maestro Rhythm King family carried the domestic aesthetic into popular recording: wood-effect surroundings, push-button rhythms, a tempo control, no suggestion that it might become psychologically complicated.
Yet these machines entered the world of Sly and the Family Stone’s There’s a Riot Goin’ On and Fresh. Their small, repetitive percussion could sit inside a recording without filling the space as a conventional kit would. Engineer Mark Greenberg, writing about the Rhythm King at Wilco’s Loft studio, also documents its later use on Mavis Staples’s If All I Was Was Black, including “Little Bit.” An old rhythm box was still finding meaningful work in 2017. [8]
Its appeal is easiest to hear as an absence. There is no grand cymbal wash announcing that something important has happened. No drummer’s arms are visible in the sound. Little knocks and ticks continue while a voice, bass or guitar supplies the emotional weather.
Greenberg also describes the less romantic business of working with one: approximate tempo settings and behaviour affected by warming up. Such quirks can be attractive on a record and rather less attractive when someone asks whether the next take will run at precisely the same speed. [8]
Korg Mini Pops 7: the useful discovery that buttons need not obey
For Jean-Michel Jarre’s Oxygène, the Korg Mini Pops 7 became something more interesting than a selection of preset accompaniments. Jarre has described using Sellotape to hold buttons down so that two preset rhythms would play together. The results were combinations the panel did not formally offer as single choices. [9]
This is an important early principle of electronic music: sometimes the most consequential feature is the one that appears when the user refuses to operate the instrument politely.
2. Roland CR-78: the quiet one before the enormous drum fill
Introduced in 1978, the Roland CR-78 CompuRhythm sits at a lovely transitional point. It retains the manners of a preset accompaniment box, including its wood-sided, furniture-friendly appearance, but adds limited user programmability. It belongs to the period when a rhythm machine could still look as though it expected to be introduced to your parents. [10]
Its sound is small in a particularly useful way. The bass drum is rounded rather than monumental. The snare is a restrained electronic snap. The percussion offers woody taps and softly busy textures rather than a stadium’s worth of room sound.
Listen to Phil Collins’s “In the Air Tonight.” The CR-78 supplies the patient little pattern underneath the opening. The spectacular fill that later arrives is Collins playing an acoustic drum kit, recorded with the famously forceful room-microphone treatment—not the rhythm box suddenly discovering its courage. Producer-engineer Hugh Padgham and Collins distinguish those elements clearly in their account of the recording. [11]
That contrast is the lesson. The machine does not have to sound enormous. It can make everything around it feel enormous.
John Foxx found a related attraction in the CR-78’s limitations. Reflecting on the machine, he argued that restricted choices could encourage better musical decisions rather than merely smaller ones. His formulation is worth keeping near any modern instrument with seventeen pages of settings: “Complexity is not the same as complication.” [12]
The CR-78’s personality is therefore not simply “vintage warmth.” It is restraint with a slightly uncanny composure. It does not explain the song. It waits inside it.
3. Roger Linn’s revolution: the LM-1 and LinnDrum are not the same machine
If the early rhythm box offered a mechanical approximation of percussion, Roger Linn proposed a more direct solution: store recordings of actual drum hits and build an instrument around playing them.
His LM-1 Drum Computer, released in 1980, was a decisive step in that direction. The original drum recordings were largely performed by Art Wood. Linn’s own history identifies Wood, which is useful because the claim that the drummer was Steve Gadd has proved remarkably resistant to correction. The LM-1 was an expensive, wood-sided professional instrument with individual sound controls, not a pocket toy. [13]
Those short recordings had an unusually concentrated presence. The sounds were recognisably related to acoustic drums, but they were also isolated, repeatable objects. Each snare could arrive with the same prepared face. Each hit could be tuned into a slightly different creature.
That changed the nature of drum arranging. A producer could organise the identity of each hit as well as its placement.
Prince and the LM-1: precision with teeth
Prince’s engineer Susan Rogers makes a distinction that casual drum-machine histories frequently blur: he favoured the LM-1, and did not simply replace it with the later LinnDrum.
More importantly, the machine was not doing all the performing. Rogers describes Prince playing fills directly with his fingers, including tom work on “Take Me With U” and the rapid bass-drum part on “Darling Nikki.” A short repeating pattern could coexist with something played in real time. [14]
Listen to those records with that in mind. The attraction is not merely that the drums are accurate. Their surfaces are peculiar: dry, tight, sometimes chewy, sometimes almost insolently close to the listener. Against a voice or guitar, such a sound can feel more intimate than a conventionally impressive drum recording.
A drum kit ordinarily suggests a person occupying a room. Prince’s LM-1 can suggest a person occupying the machinery.
LinnDrum: the polished professional
The LinnDrum, introduced in 1982, was the successor, not another name for the LM-1. It brought a revised sound set, including cymbals, into a more widely adopted instrument. [13]
Visually, it is unmistakably a piece of serious early-1980s studio equipment: a dark, sloping panel, wooden cheeks, banks of small faders, buttons and rotary controls. It looks expensive without wasting any space on friendliness.
Its character is generally more complete-kit and immediately polished than the primitive rhythm boxes. The kick has a prepared, record-ready firmness; the snare supplies a substantial backbeat; the cymbals make the arrangement feel less like a sketch waiting for a drummer.
There were practical qualifications. Not every sound had independent front-panel tuning. Changing playback speed changed both pitch and duration. And a contemporary review noted a particularly entertaining piece of song behaviour: the END marker returned playback to the beginning rather than providing the definitive cessation suggested by its name. One workaround was to add empty measures, allowing the operator time to press Stop. [15]
Here was a professional instrument that sometimes needed a little silence inserted so that a professional could catch it.
Listen to a-ha’s “Take On Me.” Producer Alan Tarney has identified the LinnDrum as part of the hit version’s construction. Its propulsion is crisp and buoyant rather than heavy: a good demonstration that the machine’s identity is not limited to a lumbering, reverberant “eighties” snare. [16]
Then jump to Katy Perry’s “Firework.” Producer Sandy Vee described using LinnDrum samples, processed within a contemporary production. That is the distinction between an instrument’s physical life and its much longer life as a supply of sounds. [17]
4. Roland TR-808: an entire cast of characters in a black box
The TR-808, introduced in 1980, looks like an instrument designed by someone who believed the future should remain legible.
There is a black panel, a clearly ordered bank of controls, and a row of sixteen step buttons travelling through red, orange, yellow and pale tones. It is inviting without being cute. Even before hearing it, you can form a reasonable suspicion about how the rhythm moves from left to right. [18]
Its design story involves more than the name on the company.
Roland founder Ikutaro Kakehashi and musician Don Lewis helped establish the requirements. Tadao Kikumoto led the development work that turned those requirements into a synthesised percussion instrument. Kikumoto has explained that the team considered the cost and practicality of sampled sound and pursued drum synthesis instead. The adjustable bass-drum decay was an intentional musical facility, not an accidental defect that later users heroically rescued. [19]
The 808’s extraordinary quality is that its voices sound related without sounding interchangeable.
The kick is a rounded blow with a low, lingering body. Shortened, it can be compact and surprisingly nimble. Lengthened, it seems to continue below the music, as though the floor has retained the note.
The snare is a brisk combination of pitched body and noisy snap. It is not especially persuasive as a recording of a snare drum in a room. It is extremely persuasive as an 808 snare.
The clap is airy and slightly smeared in time. The toms are clean, rounded electronic notes. The hi-hats have a metallic, grainy shimmer rather than the changing complexity of a real pair of cymbals. And the cowbell is one of popular music’s most successful acts of imaginative labelling: a bright, hollow, pitched clong that a cow would be unlikely to recognise as company. These voices arise from deliberately economical analogue circuits rather than stored recordings of the named instruments. [4]
What to listen for
On Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force’s “Planet Rock”, the 808’s individual sounds remain exposed enough to be heard as components of a new rhythmic vocabulary.
Producer Arthur Baker recalled obtaining access to the machine through a Village Voice advertisement: “Man with drum machine, 20 dollars a session.” The team wanted the electronic rhythmic character they heard in Kraftwerk, and the 808 gave them the means to build their own production around it. The story is rather more specific—and more interesting—than a machine appearing in a studio and automatically inventing a genre. [20]
On Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing”, the same family of sounds becomes relaxed and intimate. The percussion leaves space for the voice; the machine’s regularity makes the performance above it feel all the more personal. The 808 did not possess a single emotional setting. [21]
Nor is the familiar account of a total commercial failure followed by belated discovery quite sufficient. Kikumoto recalls Yellow Magic Orchestra using a rented pre-release 808. Important musicians were interested early. Later second-hand circulation matters, but it should not erase the people who recognised the instrument before it acquired a redemption story. [19]
How a bass drum became “an 808”
In contemporary production, an 808 often means a pitched bass sound: sustained, distorted, tuned to the song and sometimes sliding between notes.
That is a descendant of the original bass drum, not necessarily a description of an original TR-808 being operated in the studio. Producers can sample an 808 kick, stretch or loop it, transpose it, add harmonics through distortion, or synthesise a similar sound from scratch. The musical category has escaped the hardware category. [3]
This also explains why two modern “808s” may sound radically different. One is mostly deep fundamental tone. Another has enough distortion to buzz clearly through a phone speaker. One occupies the job of kick and bass together; another is paired with a separate, short kick that supplies the initial punch.
For a later listening comparison, Disclosure’s “Higher Than Ever Before” uses a software-created 808-style bass. Recognising the lineage does not identify a vintage box in the room. [3]
The useful listening question is therefore not merely “Is that an 808?” It is: which part of the 808’s behaviour has the producer kept, and what have they made it do instead?
5. Oberheim DMX and DX: the square-jawed contingent
The Oberheim DMX, introduced in 1981, belongs to the sampled-drum family. Its name carries that of company founder Tom Oberheim, but the engineering credit deserves greater precision: Gordon Rudd was its primary engineer/designer, having previously contributed to the Linn LM-1. He later worked on the Linn 9000 as well. The apparently separate family trees were populated by people moving between branches. [22]
The DMX has a sober, blue-accented professional appearance. Its sampled voices tend to suggest something more compact and confrontational than the 808’s rounded electronic ensemble: a firm kick, an assertive snare, busy hats, percussion with an immediate edge. The later DX offered a related approach in a smaller instrument. [23]
Listen to New Order’s “Blue Monday.” Its famous machine rhythm is a useful corrective to the habit of labelling almost any recognisable electronic beat “808.” The DMX is central to that production’s drum identity. Hear the clipped insistence of the pattern and the way repetition itself becomes a hook. [24]
The DMX’s relationship with tuning was less inviting than its eventual musical reputation suggests. Composer Steve Roach recalled reaching inside the machine to adjust the individual voice-card controls. He sometimes worked with it open so those adjustments remained accessible. Later, even after transferring sounds to an MPC, he missed aspects of the original working relationship. [12]
There is something wonderfully revealing about this. A modern user complains when a parameter is three menus deep. An earlier user might have had to expose the electronics.
The machine was also less sonically fixed than a simple model-name identification implies. Drum recordings could be changed through replacement chips and related external equipment. In a 1985 interview, ABC discussed alternative DMX sounds and their preference for its more abrasive character. A familiar casing did not guarantee an entirely factory-standard interior. [25]
Its personality, broadly, is directness. Where the 808 can curl around a track, a DMX backbeat often seems to put the track on notice.
6. Roland TR-606: seven sounds and no concern for your dignity
The TR-606 Drumatix, released in 1981, was conceived alongside the TB-303 Bass Line as part of a compact accompaniment system. The 303 is a bass synthesiser, not a drum machine—a distinction worth preserving even though the two are continually photographed and discussed together. Kikumoto’s development work encompassed both instruments. [26]
The 606 is small, silver, battery-capable and visibly economical. It gives you a limited group of analogue percussion sounds rather than a studio’s worth of choices. Its kick is lighter than the 808’s great low exhalation. Its snare has a thin, wiry snap. The hats are especially important: bright, persistent, metallic and capable of making a simple pattern feel much busier than its number of hits would suggest. [4]
There is no requirement that this modest sound set produce modest music.
Big Black’s early Lungs EP, including “I’m a Mess,” demonstrates what happens when the 606 is placed in an aggressively different musical setting. The precision does not soothe the guitars. It makes them seem more unreasonable. That attribution belongs to the early record; it should not be stretched into a claim that every later Big Black drum part came from the same machine. [27]
The 606 is a useful antidote to the belief that heavy music requires the heaviest available drum sound. Sometimes a small, obstinate sound is more disturbing. It does not need to overpower the band. It merely needs to refuse to be moved by it.
7. Casio MT-40: the preset that acquired a passport
While expensive American machines were entering professional studios, a small Casio keyboard was preparing to make an entirely different contribution.
The MT-40, released in 1981, was a domestic keyboard with automatic accompaniment. Among its patterns was one labelled “rock,” created by a young Casio employee, Hiroko Okuda. It would become the basis of Wayne Smith’s “Under Mi Sleng Teng,” developed in Jamaica with Noel Davey and producer King Jammy, and released in 1985. [28]
The object itself scarcely looks equal to the consequences: a compact home keyboard, little controls, miniature keys, none of the wood-sided gravity of a professional Linn.
The sound has an almost toy-like clarity. The bass movement is bouncy and plainly synthetic. The accompaniment has no interest in suggesting a sweaty room full of musicians. Once reorganised within Jamaican production, that artificiality became a strength rather than an embarrassment.
The most frequently repeated version of this story presents the preset as a happy accident: a Japanese engineer somehow, without knowing it, making the foundation of a Jamaican rhythm.
Okuda complicates that account in a rather satisfying way. She already loved reggae.
She has also rejected the recurring claims that the pattern was simply taken from Eddie Cochran’s “Somethin’ Else” or the Sex Pistols’ version of it. In her account, it was her own composition, informed by the music she listened to. The interesting story is not that an engineer knew nothing about the world into which her work travelled. It is that musical influence had already crossed borders before anyone noticed the return journey. [29]
Credit also belongs on both sides of that journey. Okuda made the pattern. Davey, Smith, Jammy and the musicians and producers who followed made its Jamaican possibilities audible.
A preset is not a finished culture.
8. Roland TR-909: the machine with somebody’s actual cymbals inside
The TR-909, introduced in 1983, replaced the 808’s black surface and warm-coloured steps with a pale enclosure, orange accents and a more conspicuously technical air. It looks like equipment that expects you to have read something before touching it.
Its sonic identity is a hybrid. Bass drum, snare, toms and several other voices are synthesised with analogue circuitry. Hi-hats, crash and ride use digital recordings. The development team had wanted workable cymbal sounds within the project’s constraints, and sampling offered a solution. [4]
The engineer responsible for the digital side, Atsushi Hoshiai, had joined Roland in 1982. The 909 was his first major assignment after his initial training.
And the cymbals were his.
The hi-hat combined a Paiste top cymbal with a Zildjian bottom cymbal. The crash and ride recordings came from different ways of striking the same 18-inch Paiste Thin Crash. The sounds were recorded in the office after hours; the useful setting was not necessarily the grandest studio available. [30]
There is a pleasingly human fact concealed in a supposedly impersonal sound. Part of the percussion vocabulary of electronic dance music began with a young engineer’s particular, mismatched pair of hi-hats.
Its audible fingerprints
The 909 kick generally announces its front edge more sharply than the 808: an impact followed by a shaped, pitched body. It can be tightened for speed or extended into something much more forceful.
The snare combines a substantial synthetic body with an emphatic noisy tail. The open hi-hat has the gritty, cutting tsssh associated with innumerable dance patterns. The ride supplies a bright metallic insistence that can transform the energy of a loop without adding a new melodic idea.
The cymbal recordings are only six-bit, but that number does not independently explain the whole character. The source cymbals, recording, editing and playback system all matter. Hoshiai describes a series of practical decisions, not a committee choosing the precise quantity of future nostalgia. [31]
The player who disproves the “press Play” objection
For the 909 as an instrument rather than a set of sounds, watch Jeff Mills, particularly the performances associated with Exhibitionist 2.
Mills describes manipulating the start/stop behaviour, tuning and levels as ways of playing the machine, not merely preparing a sequence and supervising it. He approaches its controls as a drummer approaches differences in touch. His advice to younger producers includes learning what it feels like to play percussion physically before trying to reproduce that feeling electronically. [32]
For a recorded example of the musical vocabulary, listen to “The Bells.” Attend not only to the individual hits but to the relationships between repetition, small changes and mounting insistence. Recognising a 909-style rhythm is only the beginning of understanding why it works. [33]
The 909’s great personality trait is physical confidence. It can sound dry and spare, but it rarely sounds apologetic.
9. TR-707 and TR-727: the ones with the useful display
The TR-707 and TR-727, both introduced in 1985, form a visually tidy pair: pale cases, a grid display, individual level faders, and orange or blue accents distinguishing the models.
The 707 provides a sampled drum-kit vocabulary. The 727 concentrates on Latin percussion. Unlike the 808 and 909, the original machines do not invite broad front-panel retuning of their voices; later modifications added possibilities the stock designs did not offer. [34]
Their great visual contribution is that grid. You can see the distribution of a rhythm, not simply watch a light pass over sixteen steps. The faders make the balance of the instruments tangible.
The 707 sounds crisp, relatively compact and immediately intelligible. Its snare has a blunt, useful impact. Its cymbals are bright. It does not have the 808’s subterranean bass personality or the 909’s particular combination of punch and metallic grain. That does not make it a lesser instrument; it gives it a different way of occupying a record. [35]
Larry Heard’s “Mystery of Love” and “Washing Machine” are essential listening. Heard has described buying a Jupiter-6 synthesiser and a TR-707 after becoming frustrated by the limits of expressing his compositional ideas within a band. The resulting music is evidence against the notion that emotional depth requires equipment with endless parameter variation. [36]
The 727, meanwhile, supplies congas, bongos, timbales and related percussion colours. Those can change the gait of a dance track without replacing its main drum kit. It is an accompaniment machine in a much more adventurous sense than the one its domestic ancestors understood. [37]
The family’s personality is clarity and immediacy. You see the pattern. You alter the balance. The music moves.
10. The other eighties: Drumtraks, Yamaha and Alesis
A history containing only Roland, Linn and Akai would be rather like a history of restaurants containing only establishments that later acquired commemorative plaques.
A great deal happened in the less mythologised equipment.
Sequential Circuits Drumtraks: the drummer who actually bought one
The Drumtraks, introduced in 1984 by Dave Smith’s Sequential Circuits, put programmable pitch and level control around sampled percussion. Its dark panel, wooden sides and labelled buttons place it unmistakably in the professional studio world of the period.
Reviewing it for Electronics & Music Maker, Warren Cann, Ultravox’s drummer, discussed the sounds and practical limitations in unusually useful detail. He liked the bass drum, was less satisfied with aspects of the toms, and considered the editing and output arrangements rather than treating “digital” as a sufficient compliment.
His conclusion was admirably free of review-language evasion: “I bought one.” [38]
That is worth placing beside the 909’s hostile reception. Musicians were not universally bewildered by new machines, waiting for later generations to explain their value. They were comparing specific sounds and conveniences for specific jobs.
Yamaha RX5: the immaculate surface with strange things underneath
Yamaha’s RX5, introduced in 1986, has the black-panel, display-and-buttons appearance of an instrument prepared to do a considerable amount of administrative work.
Its sampled voices can give the immediate impression of bright, polished late-eighties percussion. But substantial sound editing—including pitch, envelopes and reversal—allows it to move well beyond simply selecting a convincing kit. An envelope describes how a sound changes over time: how it starts, sustains and disappears. Alter those stages and an ordinary drum recording can become an entirely different event. [39]
The RX5 illustrates a useful distinction: a sample-playback machine can be a powerful sound-design instrument without being a sampler that records new sounds through an input.
Its inconvenience is the corresponding complexity. Once a drum hit has become an editable collection of parameters, the owner has gained expressive freedom and acquired some clerical responsibilities.
Alesis HR-16: the respectable box that went somewhere unpleasant
The Alesis HR-16, arriving in 1987, came from the work of Marcus Ryle and Michel Doidic’s Fast Forward Designs. It had a notably practical appearance: a broad grey case, a small display and a substantial set of pads. It looked more likely to help someone finish a demo than to frighten them. [40]
Its users did not observe that distinction.
DJ Premier has identified Gang Starr’s “Ex Girl to Next Girl” as his first HR-16 beat, explaining that the machine followed his SP-1200 period before he moved to the MPC60. This is an excellent reminder that a producer’s discography does not necessarily remain faithful to the instrument with which the public most strongly associates them. [41]
Godflesh’s Justin Broadrick recalled using an HR-16 for the group’s early drum sound, combining kicks and tuning some down an octave. His stated objective was not technical perfection. It was to make the result low, rough and nasty. [42]
The contrast is instructive: the same sensible-looking machine could participate in Premier’s tightly judged hip-hop or in music with the demeanour of a collapsing industrial estate.
The later SR-16 belongs in the family history too. Godflesh bassist G. C. Green has described an HR-16 failure on tour leading to its replacement by an SR-16—an unusually literal instance of one drum machine taking over another’s job. [42]
Sometimes equipment history advances because the first box stops working.
11. E-mu Drumulator and SP-1200: when a shortage became a technique
E-mu, founded by Dave Rossum and Scott Wedge, approached the problem from another direction. Its Drumulator, introduced in 1983, made sampled percussion available in a more affordable, compact format than the most expensive early drum computers.
The machine’s architecture was deliberately economical. Rossum has described engineering choices that allowed the sounds to share resources rather than requiring a lavish separate system for each voice. The result was a dark, compact instrument with a small number of large playing buttons and a distinctly less extravagant presence than a Linn. [43]
It could participate in very polished productions. Producer Chris Hughes describes the palette behind Tears for Fears’ Songs from the Big Chair as a mixture of drum machines, real drums and other sampled material. The Drumulator belongs in that mixture, not in a simplified story in which an entire album can be assigned to one box. [44]
There is also a remarkable business-history branch here. Peter Gotcher and Evan Brooks began selling alternative Drumulator sound chips through Digidrums. That work led into Digidesign, the company behind Pro Tools. An enterprise that would help reorganise professional recording grew in part from the wish to give an existing drum machine different noises. [45]
SP-12 and SP-1200: bring your own world
With the SP-12 and then the SP-1200, the crucial change was user sampling. The musician could bring in sounds from records, microphones or other equipment rather than being confined to a factory collection.
Rossum led the development of these E-mu sampling instruments. The SP-1200, introduced in 1987, became particularly important: a grey machine with eight broad trigger buttons, sliders, and approximately ten seconds of total sampling time in its original form. Its audio system used 12-bit linear sampling at 26.04 kHz. [46]
Ten seconds is not a great deal of a record. It becomes even less when several useful pieces of the record have presented themselves.
One workaround was to play a 33⅓-rpm record at 45 rpm while sampling, then lower the sample’s pitch on playback. The machine stored a shorter, faster version, which could subsequently be slowed down. This saved memory and also altered the sound. A constraint became part of the aesthetic through a repeatable act of ingenuity. [47]
What “12-bit” does—and does not—tell you
The bit depth describes the resolution with which signal amplitude is represented. The sampling rate describes how frequently the waveform is measured. Neither number tells you whether a snare lands early or a hi-hat is late.
Nor does “12-bit” independently explain the SP-1200’s appeal. Its rate, filters, pitch-changing behaviour and signal path matter together. Pitching a sample down can make its upper frequencies grainier and its edges less polished; different output paths can further shape the result. The interesting sound comes from an interacting system, not a single magic number. [48]
Listen to Public Enemy’s “Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos.” Hank Shocklee has described an accidental output choice affecting the sampled piano’s tone. What might have been diagnosed as a mistake became part of the desirable sound. [47]
The SP-1200 therefore has no single fixed drum-kit fingerprint. Its deeper identity is a method of turning borrowed recordings into forceful, compact musical material. You may hear its processing tendencies. You cannot identify it simply because the drums sound dusty.
Dust is readily available elsewhere.
12. Akai MPC60 and MPC3000: the instrument that made fingers central
Before the MPC, Roger Linn had a difficult chapter.
The Linn 9000 attempted to combine increasingly ambitious sequencing and sampling functions. Technical problems, development costs and commercial pressures contributed to Linn Electronics’ closure in 1986. Linn’s own explanation of the failure is more complicated than “one buggy machine killed the company,” but reliability and unfinished work were central concerns. [49]
The subsequent Akai MPC60, released in 1988, was a collaboration, not a solitary inventor’s complete product. Linn developed the functional design and interface, with software work in California; Akai’s Japanese team handled circuitry and mechanical engineering; David Cockerell contributed the sound chip. The later MPC3000, released in 1994, was also part of Linn’s Akai collaboration. The MPC2000 was not one of his designs. [50]
The MPC60’s physical proposition is immediate: a substantial grey workstation, a tilting display, controls arranged around a four-by-four grid of large pads.
Those pads matter. They invite the hands to organise a rhythm spatially. Kick here, snare there, another sample under that finger. An arrangement becomes something the body can learn.
The MPC is also more than a drum sound source. Its sequencing can organise other instruments through MIDI, the system that communicates musical instructions such as which note to play and when. MIDI itself is not the sound; it is the instruction passing between instruments.
The famous swing, without the incense
Quantising means moving performed events towards a chosen timing grid. Swing changes the relationship between alternating subdivisions.
For a simple pair of sixteenth notes, a 50-percent relationship is even. Around 66.7 percent, the pair takes on a long-short, triplet-like relationship. Settings between those points create subtler degrees of inequality.
Linn has explained the MPC’s reputation in deliberately unromantic terms: useful swing, responsive playing, accurate timing and well-handled sound starts. His summary was: “Not much magic, just good solid engineering and creative beat-making.” [51]
That does not mean the musicians were interchangeable. It means the box did not contain a secret substitute for their decisions.
J Dilla’s relationship with the MPC3000 is documented by something more substantial than a retrospective equipment list: the Smithsonian holds his MPC3000 Limited Edition. The standard model and the black limited edition are recognisably related instruments, but the museum’s object is a particular musician’s working possession, not a generic symbol borrowed for an exhibition. [52]
There is an important restraint to exercise here. Knowing that Dilla used an MPC does not mean that a swing setting reproduces Dilla. Nor does adding random timing errors to a pattern reproduce intentional placement.
A drummer who plays behind the beat is not necessarily failing to locate it. A producer who offsets different elements is making relationships. Randomness is a different operation.
The MPC’s personality is therefore less a fixed timbre than a physical way of deciding. It makes rhythm something you can catch with your hands, revise, layer and return to.
13. Roland R-8 and Rio: a different centre of the story
The familiar geography of drum-machine history runs through Japan, California, New York, Chicago and Detroit, with European stops added according to the writer’s record collection.
That map leaves important music outside the frame.
In Rio de Janeiro, the Roland R-8 family, particularly the R-8 MKII, became involved in the development of the tamborzão beat. Research tracing that history places DJ Luciano Oliveira and other producers in a process of assembling and circulating new percussion combinations in the late 1990s. Kick, tom and conga-type sounds were made to speak a rhythmic language quite different from the machine’s factory demonstrations. [53]
“Rap da Vila Comari,” by MCs Tito and Xandão, is a useful listening point in that account. Hear the low, tumbling interaction of the percussion, rather than expecting the orderly alternation of a conventional rock kick and snare. [53]
The research also warns against an overly tidy single-inventor story. Patterns develop socially: someone assembles a version, someone else changes it, another person makes it travel. Luciano’s own discussion of the music places the machine within that practical, collaborative environment. [54]
The distinction matters. A product specification explains what an instrument can produce electrically. It does not explain what a city will make it mean.
14. Korg Electribe and Elektron Machinedrum: the sound changes on every step
By the end of the 1990s, an important ambition was becoming explicit: a drum machine could be an instrument for developing electronic percussion, not simply selecting drum sounds.
Korg Electribe ER-1: cheerfully synthetic
Korg’s Electribe ER-1, introduced in 1999, combined an accessible step-sequencing approach with percussion synthesis. It belongs to a family conceived as smaller, distinctive electronic instruments rather than a single all-encompassing production workstation. [55]
Its compact silver surface and readily available controls encourage experimentation. The sounds can be zappy, hollow, rubbery or metallic. Rather than asking how convincingly a voice resembles a snare, the useful question becomes what happens when its pitch or modulation changes during the pattern.
A significant facility was recording changes to controls as part of the sequence. The rhythm could remember not only when a sound occurred, but how a musician had changed it. [55]
The ER-1’s personality is playfulness without much concern for acoustic plausibility. That quality is not automatically suitable for every record. It is, however, a rather efficient way of discovering sounds that would never appear in a sensible drum kit.
Elektron Machinedrum: the laboratory acquires a groove
The Elektron Machinedrum, introduced in 2001, emerged from the Swedish company associated with co-founder and designer Daniel Hansson and its development team. It combines several kinds of digital percussion synthesis and sample-based sound generation within a compact, silver-grey instrument. [56]
Its crucial idea is the parameter lock: a step can remember particular settings for the sound it triggers. One hit can have a different pitch, decay or filter position from the next. The sequence can therefore organise changes of timbre as precisely as changes of rhythm.
The result can be metallic, glassy, sharply artificial, surprisingly rounded, or deliberately difficult to name. It is not an analogue machine merely because some of its sounds resemble older analogue percussion.
The original Machinedrum should also be distinguished from the later UW—UserWave—versions, which added user sampling and resampling capabilities. [57]
Autechre’s discussion of their Quaristice-era working setup places Machinedrum alongside other instruments in a performance-oriented system. That is the appropriate scale of the claim: part of an interacting rig, not a universal explanation for every strange percussion sound in the music. [58]
There was a price for the sophistication. Reviewing the original machine, Chris Carter included “A few inscrutable operating procedures” among its disadvantages. That is a pleasingly restrained description of the moment when an instrument’s intelligence has briefly exceeded its ability to introduce itself. [59]
15. Boss SP-303 and Roland SP-404: the record becomes the instrument
The Boss SP-303 and Roland SP-404 belong to a different SP lineage from E-mu’s SP-1200. Similar letters do not make them members of the same engineering family.
These compact samplers helped establish a particularly direct relationship between samples, effects and resampling: recording a processed result back into the machine as new material.
The original SP-404, released in 2005, makes its priorities visible. Twelve pads occupy much of the surface. A small numerical display and a few prominent knobs sit above them. It does not offer the visual overview of a large recording workstation. It encourages getting hold of a sound and doing something to it. [60]
Madlib’s hotel-room studio
One of the best-documented examples of minimal equipment producing enduring work comes from Madlib.
Stones Throw’s archive records that, during a 2002 trip to Brazil, he made beats for Madvillain’s “Strange Ways” and “Rhinestone Cowboy” using a portable record player, an SP-303 and a borrowed cassette deck. Photographs document the hotel-room setup. [61]
The significance is not that inconvenience automatically produces better music. It is that the available process suited a particular musician’s decisions.
A sample could be selected, processed, replayed and combined without turning every choice into a screen-sized engineering project. Madlib’s own account of his setup describes similarly spare combinations of records, compact sampling equipment and a recorder. [62]
What does an SP sound like?
Not one thing.
The family is associated with the interaction of samples and effects: compression that makes a loop breathe or pump, filtering that darkens it, distortion that roughens it, and resampling that commits a decision into the next stage of work. Those are processes, not proof that every sound passing through the machine has acquired the same inevitable “lo-fi” coating. [60]
The original SP-404’s designer, Kenji Yamada, and later SP-404MKII developer Takeo Shirato describe a design history shaped by listening to users and observing how the machines entered musical communities. Their work also involved people such as musician and Roland product specialist Matthew Chicoine, better known as Recloose. [63]
Shirato’s earlier engineering experience included inkjet printers and digital cameras. Among the transferable problems was startup time: both a printer and a musical instrument are more useful when they stop preparing themselves and begin doing the thing you switched them on to do. [63]
There is perhaps no better corrective to the grand mythology of music technology than the knowledge that experience making a printer start promptly can help make a better beat machine.
16. The modern hybrids: not everything black with pads is the same proposition
Modern machines often combine methods that older instruments kept separate.
The Tempest, released in 2011, brought Dave Smith and Roger Linn together. It is a six-voice percussion synthesiser with analogue circuitry and digital oscillators within its voice architecture, designed around performance and sound creation. Its pads and hands-on controls invite playing rather than merely entering data. [64]
One important source of disappointed expectations was simple: it did not let users load their own samples. An instrument co-designed by Roger Linn, equipped with pads and some digitally stored waveforms, could easily be mistaken for a sampling workstation. It was a different kind of instrument. [65]
Elektron’s Analog Rytm combines analogue percussion with sample layers, allowing a synthesised body and a recorded attack or texture to work together. Again, the point is not that “analogue” has defeated “digital.” Both can be assigned useful jobs within one sound. [66]
Roland’s TR-8S approaches the family inheritance differently. Its familiar performance layout brings together digital modelling of classic drum-machine behaviour, samples and additional synthesis capabilities. Despite the ancestry of its sounds, it should not be described as an original analogue 808 or 909 circuit placed inside a newer case. [67]
These instruments make an old identification habit less reliable. A kick can contain an analogue component, a sampled component and processing that substantially changes both. A machine with “TR” on the front can play sounds imported from somewhere else entirely.
On modern records, sound families are often easier to recognise than the exact devices that delivered them.
That is not a failure of listening. It is an accurate description of the production process.
17. How to listen without becoming a drum-machine fabulist
Recognising these instruments is enjoyable. Becoming certain too quickly is the occupational hazard.
Start with the shape of the sound. Does the kick begin with a click, a knock or a soft rounded onset? Does its low tone continue? Is the snare mostly noise, or does a pitched body remain audible beneath it? Does the cymbal have a changing, complex wash, or a conspicuously repeatable metallic surface?
Then consider what the producer has done to it. Distortion can make a deep bass sound audible on small speakers by adding higher-frequency content. Reverb can turn a compact snare into an apparent architectural event. Lowering a sample’s playback rate can change its duration and texture along with its pitch. These transformations complicate identification before the question of which sampler or software played the sound even arises. [3]
Listen separately to the pattern and the tone. The same rhythm played on a CR-78, an 808 and a LinnDrum will suggest three different arrangements. Conversely, the same 808 kit can support electro, an intimate soul song or a much more forceful dance production. A machine does not possess a genre switch, however determinedly its advertising may imply otherwise.
Finally, distinguish a documented recording credit from an attractive story.
An artist owning a machine is not proof that it appears on every record. A later live reconstruction is not necessarily a diagram of the original session. And hearing a familiar sample does not reveal which device played it.
The most useful identification is sometimes modest: that is an 808-family bass sound; that is a Linn-like sampled backbeat; that has the metallic insistence associated with the 909. Then the evidence can do the rest.
The person left in the machine
It is tempting to arrange this history as a procession towards perfection: more memory, better recordings, finer timing, more realistic cymbals, larger displays.
That explains some engineering progress. It explains the music rather poorly.
The CR-78’s smallness can be its strength. The Linn’s prepared, repeatable drum hit can become a personal voice. The 606 can be useful because it is not imposing. The SP-1200’s shortage of memory can encourage a technique. The 909 can become more expressive in the hands of someone who learns its controls as thoroughly as another musician learns an instrument’s keys or strings.
None of this means faulty switches, crashing software or incomprehensible menus are secretly good. There is a difference between an instrument with character and an instrument that prevents its owner from working.
But there is also a difference between removing obstacles and removing every opportunity for a musician to intervene.
Asked about his hopes for future instruments, SP-404 designer Kenji Yamada suggested retaining a little awkwardness, rather than engineering away every opening for human involvement:
“If it evolves too much, there will be no room for people.”
After all the arguments about realism, resolution, swing and the proper contents of a cymbal, that may be the most useful specification of all: leave some room for the person who turns it on.
