Online Theremin-Style Instrument with Hand Tracking
Play a free theremin-like instrument online with hand tracking. Move one finger through a musical scale, shape the tone with your other hand, or use the touch ribbon.
Air Melody gives Hand Jam a theremin-like lead surface without requiring a physical instrument. It keeps the default movement musical by mapping horizontal hand position to the selected scale, while still offering a free-pitch option for players who want continuous control.
What this tool includes
One-finger lead
Point one finger to start a note, then move across the frame to glide through the selected scale.
Musical by default
Major and minor pentatonic choices make it easy to explore without landing on unintended notes.
Shape the tone
Use the second hand for filter, resonance, volume, ambience, and Air Dock actions while the lead hand moves.
Touch fallback
The touch ribbon and keyboard controls provide a camera-free path on phones, tablets, or blocked-camera browsers.
Pair it with chords
Latch a chord bed in Chords mode, then return to Air Melody when you want a lead over the same harmony.
How to use this tool
- Open Air Melody: Start Hand Jam and switch the instrument mode from Chords to Air Melody.
- Choose a key: Select the root and scale before you begin moving through the notes.
- Start a note: Point one finger at the camera, or press the touch ribbon on a device without camera input.
- Glide through the scale: Move left or right to change pitch and use the other hand to shape the shared tone.
- Release cleanly: Make a fist, lift from the ribbon, or press Stop when the phrase ends.
Practice tips
- Begin with a small left-to-right movement so the scale steps are easy to hear.
- Keep the pointing hand inside the camera frame and use even light for steadier tracking.
- Try headphones when exploring the glide and filter together at higher volume.
- Switch to free pitch only after the scale-aware mode feels predictable.
Online theremin questions
Is this a real theremin?
It is a browser instrument inspired by a theremin. Air Melody uses hand position to choose notes through a scale, so it is easier to play in key than an unrestricted pitch field.
How do I play the online theremin?
Choose Air Melody, point one finger, and move it horizontally. Make a fist or lift from the touch ribbon to release the lead.
Can I use it without a camera?
Yes. Drag the Air Melody touch ribbon, or hold Space and use the arrow keys for the same scale-aware lead.
Can I change the scale?
Yes. Choose the key and melody scale in Hand Jam, including pentatonic options and a free-pitch mode when you want more continuous movement.
