How to Play Music with Hand Gestures

Learn to play chords, melodies, beats and synth with hand gestures in a free browser instrument. Start with simple shapes, then add Air Melody and recording.

You do not need to know piano fingering or own a MIDI controller to start. Hand Jam gives each clear gesture a musical job: a hand shape latches harmony, a pointing finger moves through a scale, and the other hand can shape the sound or trigger a groove.

What this tool includes

Start with harmony

Five relaxed shapes are enough to play a progression. Expressive mode adds two more shapes when you want extra colour.

Move through melody

Air Melody turns a gentle raise or lower into a scale-aware lead, so a small gesture can produce a usable phrase.

Shape a sound

Hand height, openness, distance, and palm turn can influence filter, resonance, volume, and ambience.

Build a groove

Add a metronome, drum groove, arpeggiator, or 3:2 and 4:3 pattern to give the performance a pulse.

Record a take

Cover Studio combines the local camera, microphone, synth, beat, and overlays only after you start recording.

How to use this tool

  1. Start simple: Open Hand Jam and choose Easy mode with a familiar key and progression.
  2. Learn the chord shapes: Show one relaxed shape at a time and wait for the chord label to settle.
  3. Add a lead: Switch to Air Melody, point one finger, and move through the same key and scale.
  4. Shape the groove: Add a drum pattern, arpeggiator, filter movement, or polyrhythm at a comfortable tempo.
  5. Save a performance: Open Cover Studio, record when ready, review the take, and download it locally.

Practice tips

  • Learn one gesture at a time and keep the release shape simple: a fist or Stop ends the sound cleanly.
  • Choose a pentatonic scale first if you want to explore without worrying about wrong notes.
  • Use the on-screen chord label and tracking status as feedback rather than moving your hand faster.
  • On mobile, prop the device securely and keep both hands inside the camera frame.
