MOTION: Your Hands Are the Instrument
Turn your hands into a musical instrument. Play chords, melody, rhythm and expressive sound with private live camera tracking — free in your browser.
MOTION is immediate: open the page, raise your hands, and hear a musical response. One hand chooses or sculpts harmony. The other shapes tone, melody, rhythm, and movement. There is no controller to buy and no account to create.
What this tool includes
Start with one chord
Hold a clear hand shape and MOTION settles on a stable chord before it changes the sound.
Sculpt richer harmony
Chord Sculpt turns two-hand movement into contextual sevenths, ninths, inversions, dynamics, and smooth voice leading.
Move through melody
Air Melody maps hand height to notes in the selected scale while the other hand holds the harmony.
Bring in rhythm
Start a beat, arpeggiator, fill, metronome, drum groove, or polyrhythm from the same performance surface.
Record something worth sharing
Cover Studio combines the local camera, instrument audio, optional microphone, and overlays into a take you can review and download.
Private by design
Camera frames are processed on the device and are never uploaded by the instrument.
How to use this tool
- Open MOTION: Use a well-lit space with your hands visible to the camera.
- Start the camera: Allow camera access when your browser asks.
- Make the first sound: Show a clear chord shape with one hand.
- Shape the music: Use the other hand for tone, melody, rhythm, or Chord Sculpt.
- Keep a take: Open Cover Studio when you want to record, review, and download a performance.
Practice tips
- Use even front light and leave enough space for both hands to stay inside the frame.
- Begin with slow, deliberate shapes; speed comes after the tracker reads each position reliably.
- Use headphones when recording with a microphone or backing track to avoid speaker spill.
MOTION questions
What is MOTION?
MOTION is a free browser instrument that turns live hand shapes and movement into chords, melody, rhythm, and expressive sound.
Does MOTION upload my camera video?
No. Hand tracking runs on your device. Camera video is not uploaded, and recording begins only when you explicitly start a local take.
Do I need a MIDI keyboard or special controller?
No. A supported browser, camera, and your hands are the instrument. Headphones are useful when recording but are not required to begin.
Can I save what I play?
Yes. Cover Studio can create a local camera-and-audio take for immediate review and download in the browser.
