Hand Jam is a free browser gesture synth for musicians, students, and curious players. A camera turns clear hand shapes into harmony while Air Melody adds a scale-aware lead you can glide through with one finger.

What this tool includes

Chord shapes

Start with five simple shapes in Easy mode, or use Expressive mode for a seven-chord palette with OK and horns.

Air Melody

Point one finger and raise or lower the melody hand through the selected scale while the other hand holds the chord bed.

Sound design

Choose Warm, Glass, Pulse, or Organ, then add filter motion, reverb, and a tempo-synced arpeggiator.

Beats included

Add a metronome, drum groove, or 3:2 and 4:3 polyrhythm without leaving the instrument.

Beat challenge

Start a shared-beat I–V–IV–V exercise and get local feedback as you land each confirmed chord change.

Local recording

Capture a camera-and-audio take in Cover Studio, review it immediately, and download it from the browser.

How to use this tool

  1. Open Hand Jam: Launch the browser gesture synth and choose Chords or Air Melody.
  2. Choose a sound: Pick a key, progression, synth tone, beat, or arpeggiator settings.
  3. Enable input: Start the camera and allow access when the browser asks.
  4. Play the instrument: Hold a clear hand shape for a chord or point and glide through the scale.
  5. Practice the groove: Start Beat Challenge and follow the on-screen chord target with clear hand gestures.
  6. Make a take: Open Cover Studio when you want to review or download a local performance.

Practice tips

  • Start with a relaxed, easy-to-see shape and keep it still briefly when changing chords.
  • Use headphones when recording a vocal or local backing track to reduce speaker spill.
  • On a phone or tablet, prop the device at hand height and use even light so the full hand stays visible.
  • Use the same key and scale in Chords and Air Melody so the harmony and lead stay together.

What is an online gesture synth?

It is a browser instrument that maps hand shapes and movement to chords, melody, tone, or rhythm. Hand Jam runs the tracking and audio locally in the browser.

Do I need a MIDI keyboard?

No. MOTION uses your camera and hand movements as the musical input.

Can I play chords with one hand?

Yes. Chords mode assigns a stable chord to each supported hand shape and keeps it sounding until you show a release shape or press Stop.

Can I practice chord changes against a beat?

Yes. Start Beat Challenge to follow a four-step I–V–IV–V target against the shared groove and get local feedback.

Where are the beat controls?

Use Play beat in the hero or live stage, press B, or point at Beat in Air Dock while Chords mode is running. Fill is held while a beat plays.

Can I record what I play?

Yes. Cover Studio can combine the local camera, microphone, synth, beat, and overlays into a take that you review and download in the browser.
