Polymeter Generator Online
Free online polymeter generator: loop different meters at one pulse until they realign. Compare polymeter with polyrhythm on visual grids, with MIDI and links.
Compare independent meters at one steady pulse, hear where their barlines realign, and turn the resulting groove into a playable idea.
What this tool includes
Independent meters
Run different bar lengths together so each meter keeps its own barline and accent pattern.
Polymeter vs polyrhythm
Use polymeter for independent bar lengths; use polyrhythm when different pulse counts share one cycle.
Play the result
Open MOTION to play chords, melodies, beats, and synth with simple hand movements.
How to use this tool
- Choose the meters and set a comfortable shared pulse.
- Listen for each downbeat, then wait for the full cycle to realign.
- Move the finished groove into MOTION when you want to perform it with two hands.
Practice tips
- Two bar lengths realign after their lowest common multiple of beats: 7 over 4 comes back together every 28 beats, which is seven bars of four or four bars of seven.
- Keep the shared pulse slow enough to feel both downbeats. If one meter starts to sound like a syncopation of the other, you have stopped hearing it as its own bar.
- Accent only the downbeats at first; add the inner beats of each bar once the two cycles are secure.
Polymeter questions
What is the difference between polymeter and polyrhythm?
A polyrhythm fits different pulse counts into one shared duration, so the pulses of each layer are different lengths. A polymeter keeps one pulse and gives each layer a different bar length, so the pulses match and only the barlines drift apart and realign.
Is 7/8 over 4/4 a polymeter?
Yes, if both use the same eighth-note pulse. A seven-eighth bar and a four-four bar (eight eighths) realign every 56 eighth notes: eight bars of 7/8 against seven bars of 4/4.
Can I hear both at once?
Yes. The generator plays both meters with separate sounds and shows both barlines on the grid, and every setting lives in the URL so a preset can be shared.
