Tempo and feel
Keep the first two bars economical. The break becomes exciting because the third and fourth bars disturb the listener's expectation without losing the pulse. The default tempo is 136 BPM. Slow it down until every hit is controlled, then raise the tempo a few BPM at a time.
How to practise the Amen Break
Learn bars 1 and 2 as one repeated cell. Move the bar-3 final snare from beat 4 to the “and” of 4. Keep beat 1 empty in bar 4, then place its early snare, double kick and crash turnaround.
Variations to try next
Play only kick and accented snare. Add the ride eighths without losing the ghost-note hierarchy. Practise bars 3 and 4 at half speed before closing the four-bar loop.
